Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST
The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (Fraunhofer IST) focuses on research and development in the fields of material synthesis and functionalization, surface treatment and modification, coating technologies and characterization, and production technology. Within the department of Process and Production Technologies for Sustainable Energy Storage, battery research is set as the central topic, focusing on material and energy storage development and the associated process technologies. One major focus is the manufacture of novel solid-state batteries. Further key areas of research include the holistic design of factory systems, life cycle management for energy storage systems, and the entire value chain in the area of “hydrogen technology” from production through to storage and utilization. For eLi, Fraunhofer IST will bring the traditional core competencies of the Fraunhofer IST in the field of surface technology in order to process new materials including modified electrodes and enhanced surface design. Likewise, it will take part in the development of process technologies and the evaluation of scaling-up possibilities, from laboratory to pilot scale.
